Patience in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Patience

Manjula Selvarajah was on CBC’s Early Edition this morning talking about patience and AI chatbots. Two topics I’m highly interested in.

Philosopher Christian Miller argues that leaning heavily on generative AI trains us to expect instant answers and constant gratification, and that it’s steadily eroding the virtue of patience. I sometimes refer to patience as my superpower, and I believe it’s the strongest muscle I’ve developed in 25 years of practicing yoga.

Patience is what gets us through the days, raising kids, interacting with other humans. It’s not often easy.

Patience comes up a lot in the Yin Yoga classes I lead at STRETCH. Spending five or more minutes in a simple twist takes patience. There’s the desire to push yourself, the feeling of lost productivity… but I believe the time is the opportunity. The opportunity to spend time with yourself, to notice how your body feels, to notice the different ways your mind responds to stillness. There’s patience in Rocket Yoga too. I was exercising it in backbends with Risto in his 7am class this morning.

Notice how you’re using technology and how it’s affecting you. Then come spend some time on your mat with us at STRETCH.

PS: This image is a still from a video which came up when I searched my terabytes of personal photos and videos for “patience”. My kid (who approved the use of her image) setting up a path, and following it. Who knows where a little patience will lead us.
